The Lufthansa Technik Group’s global expansion vision is now approaching a more exciting phase as ambitious plans for further expansion worldwide include a major development in Malta. The project which will be inaugurated in the last quarter of 2008 focuses on the setting up of an Airbus wide-body aircraft overhaul facility with two bays in addition to the current services.
This will entail an investment by the Government of Malta and Lufthansa Technik AG in excess of 55 million Euros, increasing LHT’s shareholding to over 90% in the LTM venture.
This new facility will be able to accommodate two wide-body aircraft simultaneously in order to carry out ‘C’ checks maintenance and ‘D’ checks, commonly known as overhaul, of the Airbus A330 and A340. The new hangar will also accommodate a number of workshops to support the facility. There is no doubt that the Customer remains the critical focus for Lufthansa Technik Malta. In fact Lufthansa Technik Malta constantly seeks to expand its current customer base and will be concluding contracts with customers for its new facility as from 2007.
The new operation will bring value to the national economy. It will undoubtedly lead to job creation. It is estimated that over 500 new job opportunities will be created as a result of this expansion. More than 400 of these are technical jobs at various levels. These include certifying staff, licensed mechanics such as Cat ‘B’ and Cat ‘A’, unlicensed aircraft mechanics and workshop mechanics. This means a compliment of over 700 employees when the project is competed. The expansion project will also lead to various spin offs in the local economy with local contractors being taken on for various parts of the project as well as through the provision of services.
The Expansion Project offers excellent opportunities for education and training in a new area, offering exciting possibilities for youngsters and those seeking exciting opportunities on the international and dynamic field of aircraft maintenance. The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) located at Paola offers programmes of studies in aircraft maintenance, sheet metal and composite and related areas for interested candidates. These are encouraged to contact either the HR Department at Lufthansa Technik Malta or MCAST directly.
